For those who tried everything and could still not get Steam working, I think I found a solution. This is a bit weird, but for me while Steam was. So, Steam (a well-known game-to-computer content delivery system) recently released for Mac OS X, and as of today, only one hundred of the games available on Steam are cross-platform. It’s a start, but it’s not yet the revolution every Mac gamer would like it to be. To this end, I’ve made a short how-to so that you can play some of Steam’s PC-only games on Mac OS X. However, this will not work with every game. In fact, you’re rather lucky if it works at all.
It won’t work, for example, with games that use the Unreal 3 engine (so Mass Effect, Mirror’s Edge, UT3 are all out). Online multiplayer will not work, and Valve’s own games (running the Source engine) won’t work either, though they’re releasing their games with surprising regularity these days. The rule of thumb is that is your game was released before 2007, there’s a strong chance it’ll work.
Now, onward to the tutorial. I’ve done a screencast for you, but for those of you who dislike Irish accents, I’ve laid out the steps for you here (though they’re certainly not as useful as the screencast). Screencast Step-by-step. Download the FlaxSteam zip, and install CXZAquamarineEngine. Download your game from Steam, using the included Steam (PC) app. This is essentially the Windows version of Steam, allowing you to download Windows games.
Right-click (or control-click) Steam (PC).app and select “Show Package Contents”, and do the same for Target.app. Move your game folder (usually the name of the publisher) from “Steam (PC).app/Contents/root/drivec/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/“ to “Target.app/Contents/root/drivec/Program Files/“. Now open “Target.app/Contents/Info.plist” with Property List Editor and change CXOEMWorkDir to the path of the folder that contains the game’s executable, then change CXOEMCmdLine to the path of the game’s executable. Move the contents of the included SteamDLLs folder to the folder that contains the game’s executable. With luck, your game is now playable. This couldn’t be done without the amazing, and, so credit goes to them. I encourage you to donate to them both.

I did all this and it was working fine, but at the very end, it said there was an error called POLshortcut as I was finishing installing Steam. Do you know what that's all about? Hmmmm am not sure.

Havent had that error personally. From google: Did you install steam into it's default location through play on mac? Apparently steam and play on mac need to be installed into their default locations, not into any other directories. Also I have found that if i try to run steam from the icon that play on mac sets on the desktop it stops working sometimes, so open play on mac and start steam from there. So here's what I do: Open PlayOnMac Click Install a program Search for Steam and click the icon and click install I go through the prompts and I install the Microsoft fonts (twice) like it prompts me to do Then Steam Setup appears and I follow the prompts I let it install in the default folder it gives me and click Install It says I can now run Steam and so I click Finish This is when the popup appears on my PlayOnMac window that says: Error in main Steam crashed Select its shortcut and click on 'Debug' in the side panel to get more details No matter what, there is always some sort of error. So I hit Next and it actually allows me to open Steam and I can install my Civ game So I wait ten minutes or so for it to install but when I click on it, it'll start playing the opening sequence, but as soon as I try to click on anything, it bugs out, minimizes into the upper lefthand corner of the screen, and goes completely white. What's weird is that I can still hear the music playing and if I manage to click in the right spot, I'll hear the game interacting with me, I just can't see it for the life of me. And now I have that much less memory on my computer and I don't know what to do! It doesn't seem to be working still and I don't know what stage of the process I'm getting messed up on. I just know it has something to do with that error.
Do I need to have some special version of Wine or something? I just don't know. Honestly I'm really not sure mate, I haven't got any idea on what that could be other than like i was saying earlier about some graphics glitches. Try downloading say 2 or 3 other games and see how they go, just small ones will do. If they work it may just be some incompatiblilty that happens with emulation on all platforms. Also could try posting on your last post on the playonmac forums here: Am sure someone there could point in the right direction.
Oh and the much less memory will be the second steam install plus the games you download inside it:).
